Like most of them, there is a strong emphasis on urban living, and particularly, on Istanbul. This volume is particularly strong on issues of popular culture and its interaction with gender|About the Author|Deniz Kandiyoti is a reader in the department of development studies in the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies. She is the editor of Women, Islam and the State and Gendering the Middle East and the author of Concubines
